The perfect is the enemy of the good.
A guy has "right side" 4x4 decal for '97.
Wouldn't right and left be the same? Or are angles reversed or something?
You don't reverse the letters/numbers that's for sure
 
1 sticker both sides.
 
Just put a 4 on each side and the x on the tailgate. That way you only have to buy one decal.
