Dead truck, HELP!

OK, updates for any/all concerned:

Definitely not the major relays, swapped 'em around and no change. Can hear the fuel pump hum at key turn. Starter motor is engaging and turning. Battery is obviously holding a charge. All of the fuses are intact in both boxes.

Will try to find a spare plug on my bench tonight and check spark w/it tomorrow. Presuming that I'm getting spark, is it possible for a short in the engine compartment to damage the fuel pump in such a way for the pump to still self-prime, but not deliver fuel, while sparing the relay?

I'm open to the pump being the problem, but the way the engine cut out just didn't feel like fuel starvation--even if the pump suddenly died, carryover pressure should have tapered off, instead of that sudden stop.

Or is there another possible solution? Wondering if the vacuum system is required for starting, and if the vac line on the back of the HCV ingested anything if that would cause the problem.

Thanks,

Matt

I cant believe we over looked something so obvious LOL !

To check your timing belt simply have some one turn the engine over with a light couple of bumps on the ignition while either looking at or feeling the cam gear belt guide in front of the valve cover on top of the engine. You can visually see it spin as well as feel it. If its not turning the timing belt has broken.

I'll give it a try tomorrow--will update when I have info. Will also bring a spark plug to check for spark if I remember. Thanks!

If you have a harbor freight in your area stop by and purchase a spark tester. One end plugs in to the spark plug wire and the other slides over the coil post with a clear tube in the middle to show spark. Bout' $5 and a whole lot safer then shocking your self with a spark plug.

...aaaaaaand we have a winner!

In a bizarre display of timing, circumstance, and coincidence, my 1996 Ranger has accomplished the following feats in a twelve-hour period of time:

1) Developed a severe leak in the Heat Control Valve
2) Sprayed brake fluid out of a semi-closed cap, all over the engine bay fuse box (ok, I helped on that one)
3) Completely snapped a timing belt to the point that the end is sticking out of the bottom of the cover. Good call, Earl!

Mystery solved, now I just have to fix the sucker.
