Is it possible to kill a steering box? I haven't had power steering for over a year now. Last October I swapped in a new motor and the fitting on the pump were different on the new one, so I couldn't use the pump that came on it. So I usd the old pump which I let drain on the floor. I hooked everything up, but didn't really bleed it until later when I notice on a test drive that I had no power steering. I never was really able to bleed it that well, and no matter what I did, I couldn't feel any difference. So I swapped on another pump, still no difference. It seems to me that the pump going bad would cause this, but not the box, or am I missing something?

Sounds more like the pump isn't appropriate to the application.

To get the behavior you describe, either the valve body would have to seize (I suppose it could....) or the piston would need a hole in it.

I replaced the original pump with another from a 2.9 Ranger, so the application is correct. The box is leaking a little bit at the pitman arm seal, but did that even when it worked.

Yep, wasn't the box. But at least now it doesn't leak. I however, am completely stumped.
