I have to 2 dead cylinders in my 2001 3.0l v6 ranger. does anyone know what would be the most likely cause of this? number 3 and number 5 have no compression

We can guess if you like, but whatever did it it's gotta come apart.

It might be helpful to know the symptions it had as the miss developed.

Unless it suddenly went BOOM something is amiss here!! Sure would like more information.. Surely it can't run at all.. could even be locked up with two completely dead cylinders.. Mayhaps the test was done incorrectly.. Why was a test done in the first place?

Big Jim can smell an improperly performed compression check from a mile away... he's done it before.

Need way more data, but I can tell you shutting down 3 and 5 is no way to save gas, LOL.

it still runs just really rough, hard to start when its warm, shutters bad at low rpms, and almost dies at stops. I took it to a shop cuz it took about a half a hour just to get it start up last week. they check the fuel pressure and said it was good. checked the exhaust back pressure and it was good. did a compression check and told me 3 and 5 had 0, 1-55,2-60,4-55,6-50. and it's sucking gas like motherf***er

:bad: Millwright the numbers you posted cannot be real.. an engine with them numbers simply can't run..

I would suspect a timeing issue.. something is causing the timing to be severly retarded, is where I would start.

Prolly using gas from a lack of vaccume..

Did it suddenly start like this or has it slowly been getting worse? Does it make internal sounds? Have you got a 16 year old kid?

How did the mechanic number the cylinders?

(1) (3) (5)
|=======
(2) (4) (6)

or

(1) (2) (3)
|=======
(4) (5) (6)

Where | is the front of the motor

If he numbered the the first way, the I would bet on a head gasket blown between the #3 and #5 cylinders (though this is the improper way to numbers the cylinders on this engine). A blown head gasket wont always leak oir or antifreeze.

I have no suggestions for the second of the two scenarios, Sorry....

On a side note, I once had a 460 that ran on only 4 cylinders, my friend forgot to hook up the plug wires on his side of the engine, but hey, it started anyway, ran like shit, but it started! I loved that motor, wish I still had it. A 460 in a Ranger WOULD be the shizzle.

there are a number of 3.0L with valve seat recession problems and the compression test should eb numbers around 120-180 depending on the battery and how beat your motor is, if you have zero compression in any cylinder remove valve cover remove rockers and charge cylinders with air 100 psi is best listen for the noise. if the intake has air noise there is an intake valve problem, if the exhaust has air noise the exhaust valve has a problem, when the valve cover is off also check for broken valve springs. there may be a little air escaping into the crankcase past the rings, but that is normal at the bottom of the piston travel.
