dangerranger1983 build

after you get all your new parts on the truck, get the front alinement checked, also have them check the angle (can't remember whats it's called at the moment) that the ball joints set that helps with tracking.

there is a episode of "Truck U" that dealt with the death wobble on a jeep, you might want to search for that episode and see what all they did to get rid of it, at the moment I just can't remember (one of the problems with getting old)

Its called my castor and ya I think it needs re-adjusted, I can see that the coil mounts arent level (as a starting point that is). I plan on taking it to a shop to get it alined.

Got two of the TRE's changed and wow no more movement from anything but will replace the draglink one (bought it already) and put the Ranger TRE in it for the pitman arm tomorrow.

FYI- Most shops won't adjust the caster with our long arms... the two shops I went to said they wouldn't touch the arms because they wern't OEM. Your going to have to adjust the caster yourself.

I was going to adjust the caster myself anyways, I just want the to have them point my wheels striaght, well as they should be at least.

Went over some railroad tracks and still have the death wobble, but it didnt happen immediatly though, all tires went over doing 35mph was good then 2 seconds later, right side kicks up and it started. read that the right side is the side that starts it all by it making contact to the bump first. Got home though the new parts are firm and dont move, its the other that have to be replaced that still move. Still trying to figure out exactly how caster effects all this though. Also need to check my front tires pressure too and seeing if playing with those (if the DW still happens after all this is done and fixed) and see if its helping to cause all of this.

Also need to find a good name in steering stablizers too, but have to make a mount once I get one. I also bet a sway bar would help, since it ties the two sides together. So much to do and so much to figure out, guess going down the list one by one should help.

Right now sitting on the side of the road waiting for the tow truck to show up, the death wobble is so bad i cant drive home without it happening on a half way smooth road and everybody is riding you to go faster and i have to suddenly brake every 10 seconds for it to stop. I was on my way home to go get the caster fixed and check everything else out but guess i cant make it alone now.

not good. hope you get it fixed up

that's not good. There is something seriously loose to make it DW that bad. Check everything in the steering and suspension.

Got her home, nothing was lose but my caster was way off so after jacking up the truck, taking the tires off, etc..... it now looks to be where it needs to, the pinion angle matches the driveshaft now. Took it around my neighborhood and tested it seems good. i use to hit the brakes and it would wobble sopmetimes and it even started a DW the other day. Well on my test run I just did mashed the brakes over and over while at a good speed and not even a wobble or anything, and ya the brakes are so good that Im making MT tires bark and it has enough body rool too that when im on it and turn and push the skinny pedal, I can get a rear tire to left and make it peel out a bit (and remember people, dont try the stuff that I do).

Just waiting on 5 o'clock traffic to go away so that I can go back to my girlfriends house (thats where I was comming from) so that I could fix the truck.

And ya I have pics of her going on the tow truck and this time they brought a flat bed too. Mind you that this was all done on a steep hill too with people riding my ass na dnot learning from the first time that it may happen again.

Have to say, it hurts haviing your truck that you built to do anything be towed home by something that it just cant overcome, such as getting stuck in a mud hole. Plus it also being its second time too.

bummer man... did you set your caster with an angle finder or just by eye?

i set it by eye but i will say that it isnt triggered as easily now. But this all didnt start till after i changed my wheel bearing, sounds weird but its true and i dont see how changing it effected it but i did it right as warm weather hit, i forgot to take out air out of my front tires too. I stll need to get a steering stablizer, i know that will help out alot, without it and adjusting my caster i can hit bumps that triggered and it doesnt cause DW but when both tires go over roads that effect both tires may or may not cause it but i cant draw a conclusion until i get everything done on it.

What pressure is everybody else running on this type of setup, i have read from the professionals on this suggest running around 18psi or so is where i should be at.

I didn't have a sas' but on my 33x12.50s I was running 32 :dunno: I'd think the lower pressure would make dw worse. It'd be easier for the sidewalls to flex and hop around

I cant really tell you a definate answer, i was runnin anywhere between 35 psi to 8 psi depending on the day and what i was doin that day. never made a difference. i would run low pressure out on the trail's and when i hit the road to go racing i would normally run around 35. I never experienced DW once in my setup. but I can tell you my driveshaft and pinion angle were nowhere near the same. my pinion angle was closer to level. you may still have castor issue's you can get a cheap angle finder from most hardware store's to help you dial in the correct angle.

i run around 22psi in my 35's so i get the right tread contact with the road. But i am running a narrow 8" rim.
i had some dw before i put a new stabilizer on it. But the dw was not as bad as what your experiencing.

does the banjo bolt of the ford fit the d30 caliper? if not, how did you do the brakes

my brakes are the stock jeep ones , they use alan bolta to hold them on but still keeps them in free floatig mode.

I have an angel finder but couldnt find it, garage is a mess but my pinion angel is matching my driveshaft angle, pics later. I also see that my passenger spring isnt in full contact with the lower bucket due to a weld on my axle track bar mount but nothing a grinder cant fix. But also it isnt as compressed either but since the coils are 180 degrees rotated of eachother, the end of the coil on the driverside is compressed enough to touch the next coil above it but on the passenger side, it points forward and isnt.

Right now my lower ball joints are furture back then my top ones, cant remember if thats positive or negative camber but it has allowed my pinion angle to match my driveshaft.

And i too are running 8 inch wide rims and not all my tread is touching the road on my tires, will check the pressure soon and adjust and play with it.

I think that running a stablizer shock will help me out alot, get paid friday so thats the day that i will be getting one.
