Dana 70 TTB?!?

So, I found a set of axles off of a 1980 F-250. The rear was a Dana 70 Full Float, the guy wasn't sure what the front was, but he assumed it was a Dana 70. The front is a TTB setup with the 8 lug hubs. Did they ever even make a D70 front, or put one in a TTB in the F250/350's? I am hoping it is a Dana 44, and I can swap the hubs onto my D35, if not oh well, I can just sell them again. And if it is a D70, is it possible to swap hubs, or are they too huge? I didn't have time to fully inspect them tonight, before the sun went down, so I figured I ask around and see what kind of info I could turn up. Thanks for the help!
 
dana TTB setups only came in the 28,35,44,50 versions as far as i know.

Yeah no D70 TTB. That axle should be either a 44 or a 50
 
sounds like a d44hd or a dana50, if you look at the bottom of the diff. it will say 44 or 50. also it will most likely be a leaf sprung up front for the 44hd and 50, and the beams are shorter than coil sprung beams from a 150 or bronco, but if the 44 or 50 have the gears you want, it may be cheaper for you to grab the diff, and then buy the a standard 44 ttb.

Best way to tell the D44 from the D50 is the axleshafts. A 44's shafts will look like your D35 shafts. The 50 has external retaining clips on the u-joints (much like driveshaft joints do). The D50 has larger hubs & rotors as well (same size as a D60) and would not be adaptable to the D35.

Alright, Thanks for all the info. I got a better look at them today, and the U-Joints look like the normal ones on the D35 to me, unless they have covers over the external retainers.

I took some pics, these are all off the drivers side beam.

What do you think it is?

Oh, also, I looked on the pumpkin for it to be stamped, and the only thing stamped in the bottom was: 327 and a larger number 8. I don't know what those numbers mean, but maybe some else does.

Edit: Oh yeah, it was leaf sprung up front. But, I don't see how that would make a difference in determining what axle it is. All of the 3/4 and 1 Tons were leaf sprung all the way up through to the mid 2000's.

I'd take another look at the rear axle. Just skimming through Dana's axle book, I don't see any D70 installed in any F250. I see a full-float D60 and D61 up to '79, then only semi-floater Dana's in F250s after that.

Maybe it's a Sterling axle.
 
Nah, the rear is definitely a Dana, it has the plug in the diff cover. Heres some pics of that, decide for yourself, as I do not care what the rear is, I'm not using it. But, while on the subject, the guy I bought them from said that it has been used as a plow truck since day 1. So, I have heard the term "Snowfighter Option" thrown around before, maybe it was one of them? I don't know.

4x4Junkie - Yeah, she's a little rusty, but a little revamping should have her looking sharp in no time. So definitely a D44? Then I shouldn't have a problem modding my D35 Beams right?

Well, heres another clue towards the rear axle mystery. I posted the rims and tires on craigslist, and somebody called me about them tonight, so I went out and took them off the axles. And on the drivers side of the rear axle were LEFT HANDED LUGNUTS?!?! You should've seen me trying to break them loose until my Dad and I figured that out! :icon_rofl: My Dad told me the only trucks he remembered having left handed lugnuts were Dodges back in the 60's. So, somehwere along the way, somebody may have swapped in that rear axle. I don't know, just kind of adds to the mystery, now you've got me thinking...
 
That smooth housing looks old too. I had a '67 International Harvester pickup that had a 14-bolt swapped into it--also a former plow truck.
 
I used a Dana 70U from a F350 in my Jeep CJ swap. It had the different nuts (lug) you are talking about. It was also from the '70's. The stud itself had a "L" stamped on it. The U in the 70U stood for "undersize" on the pinon nut from what I understand.
 
What are the numbers on this tab? It's not a 14 bolt, obviously, cause it's got 10 bolts, 60s and 70s have 10 bolts, and should have the model on this tab here.
