I have been reading about installing a f150 dana 44 ina ranger. I have a 78 ford 150 witha 44 and a 9. Will the dana 44 pretty much bolt in to my explorer? I really dont want to do any welding on the front. What needs to be done. Anyinfo would be appreciated.

search....its far from bolt in and not for the backyard mechanic

It can be done and could be nearly bolt in depending on the axle you are using and the components you would like to use with it. CheapThrills had a fairly well documented swap here, you might look for that. He's since switched to a leaf spring setup. That's far from bolt-in.

Are you going to keep the rad. arm style?

You MIGHT have to cut the rad arm wedges off the axle and move to the disired location because the coil seats bolt into the rad. arms.

I've seen several bolt in swaps.

i consider bolt on to be something that any idiot whos owned a civic can do, for me my box bronco 44 was 100% bolt on, but only becuase i knew what parts to get, and full width 44 is NOT a bolt in swap

78-79 rad arm frame brackets work the best and use the stock frame hole where the stock trans x-member was...read the tech library it has more detailed info

I see where you're coming from and agree. Just because something "bolts in" does not mean it's an easy job.
