I'm slowly building an off-road ranger and am now looking into a Dana 44 axle swap. Currently I have stock shocks but want a coilover conversion as well. However I'm fairly new to this level of customization. Have any of you done a build like this? Any advice to help would be much appreciated.

Front or rear?

What kind of Dana 44 you talking? I'm only aware of solid axles and the TTB. That's gonna be some serious cutting and welding in either case.

Also this^. I forget they can be used in the rear.

I was thinking of a Dana 44 solid axle. Do you have any suggestions for an upgraded axle?

My rough draft is to find one from a bronco or f150 at a junkyard and install it as I'm on somewhat of a budget

IIRC anything F150 is gonna be significantly wider than what you have. To be close on width you'd be looking for an Early Bronco axle of something from Jeep, I think. IDK if that matters to you. F150 went to TTB in 80.

Hmm well after a bit more research I noticed the ranger has a sla 35 in the front which has less wheel travel than a solid axle. Since I want a coilover conversion is there any solid axle that would improve wheel travel for off-roading and allow a front locker? Preferably one with the same bolt pattern as I have the wheels I'd want already. After this swap I'll be one happy camper.

What your talking about isn't exactly a 'swap'... Its a complete reengineering of the front end.

Just doing a SAS with leafs is bad enough.. if you want coilovers it's gonna greatly complicate things.. 3/4 link will be necessary

How about this conversion kit by Rick rangers?

That's for a stock t bar front suspension, not a solid axle.

That would improve off-road capability pretty drastically though right? Here's a picture of my current axle.

A solid axle swap would drastically improve its capability, yes.

It's not exactly a simple undertaking though..
