Is there a torque spec for the bolts that bolt the aluminum diff. housing to the beam on a D35 TTB? This is a 96 model D35 and not the hybrid. I have searched and been unable to find it. Any help would be appreciated.

^ That doesnt sound right. 70 lb/ft sounds like a LOT of torque for a small bolt going into an aluminum housing.

I have always gone "snug" with a 3/8 ratchet. Remember, its cast aluminum. Tightened then in logical sequence (I do them in two star patterns) I recommend doing them in two steps to make sure it clamps even.

My factory manual says 38-53 ft-lbs.

If it was mine, I'd drill the thread out of each hole and put M10-1.5 steel thread inserts (Helicoils) into each hole, then bolt it up to the beam. This should avoid any future hassles with stripped threads in the aluminum (after 2 or 3 times taking it off, it's bound to happen, especially with those dumb triangle-shaped stock bolts).

Hm. Thanks for catching my mistake.

I didn't know off my head, and my Haynes is home in the garage, so I Googled it. The first source specified the 10 bolt should be 70 ft-lbs. I could have misread the line and pulled the ring gear bolt torque of 70 ft-lbs instead.

Always go with TRS numbers. *smack /facepalm*

Thanks for the info, what started out as just doing the axle u-joints, then decided the ball joints needed to be replaced, might as well do all new seals and bearings, and ended up just removing both axle beams and stripping and painting them.

It's also possible that you read it correctly in the wrong units. 70 Nm lines up pretty well with the correct spec.
