I'm goin to the junk yard to get a D35 TTB out of a 4.0 ranger in the next couple days, but I've been researching rings and pinions because I'm going to be buying either 4.56 or 4.88 to put in it, along with a 8.8 rear. As I'm looking through the choices of ring and pinions, I came across gear sets for both standard rotation and reverse rotation D35's. So now to the question part: I've got a 94 Ranger 3.0L 4x4. Does it matter if I find a standard rotation or reverse rotation front axle to put in my Ranger? If so, how will I tell by looking at the 4.0 rangers in the yard what rotation it is?

If it's a TTB D35 then it's reverse rotation.

I don't like that naming, though. Reverse cut is more accurate. The gears don't actually spin backwards, just the teeth are cut the opposite of a standard cut gear.

dude you have a 94 you should have a dana 35.

He could have the Hybrid 28/35..

Standard cut D35's were commonly used for Jeep rearends. But ALL TTB D35's were reverse cut.

Awesome. Thanks for the clarification.

So when selecting gears, is there a true difference between the brands, like Yukon, Nitro or Genuine Gear? There's a 30 to 40 dollar difference between the brands for basically the same exact ring and pinion, right?

I've generally seen good gears come out of Yukon boxes. Nitro looks very promising as well (haven't actually set any up myself yet though). Stay away from Genuine.

What ratio you're getting can often dictate what brand gears you'll be able to get too, since some manufacturers only make certain ratios.

Nitro has 4.56, 4.88 and 5.13 for the D35. Yukon I know doesn't have 4.88, but they should have 4.56. Not sure if Yukon ever got 5.13s back in or not (they showed a backorder for those for a good long time on their site).

P.S., you may want to check if you have the actual D35 under your truck. Many 3.0s did come with them (you'll have to have the D35 if you want to regear it)

Ok, thanks alot. And btw, Yukon I think is now listing a 4.88 for the reverse dana 35 and a 4.88 for the 8.8 rear. Still no 5.13's though. I think I'll go with the Nitros to save a little cash, 4.88 gearing.

Yukon DOES make 4.88 for both the 8.8 and D35 Rev Rotation because I have them in my truck...

ok was thinking you had a 4.0 pull your front hub off and count the spines to make sure b4 you buy gears.
No. The outers are the same as a standard D35. If the pig is smooth, it's a hybrid, if it's ribbed, it's a true D35.

On the bottom of the aluminum housing.
