dana 28 with 35's ?

i have a 88 ranger and i am wanting to put 35 12.50s on it i was wondering if the whole dana 28 axle would be a problem?
i do do some wheelein but nothing that serious, i really just want the truck to look pretty nice and still be able to go out and have some fun when i want to.

Should be fine I bought my beater with 35x12.50s on it and it was sluggish but the kid drove it everyday I dropped down a size to 34s and only wheel it with no broken parts yet from the front end.

It's a good way to see what a D28 looks like in pieces 35's are starting to push it on a D35, much less a D28... At least do a D35 swap... You'll get pretty good at doing wheel bearings, too...

Not really, just shorten the driveshaft. There is a write-up in the Tech Library.

well i know this is going in the wrong direction. But i have a extra dana 30 from my buddys jeep. i know its only a dana 30 and everyone says just go to a dana 44 but it saves money. Does anyone know how hard the swap would be. Cost? or any info on it?

Again, look in the tech libray and do a search for 'Dana 30 Swap' and 'sas swap'

A dana 35 will be an easier swap, and will fair better with 35's...

i know this. I just want to save some money i mean i have a front a rear axles from a jeep just sitting around. i then dont have to buy a d35 or shorten the drive shaft.
im sure its harder to sas the ranger but its cheaper for me.

Not necessarily. Why not sell the Jeep axles and use the money to buy an Explorer Dana 35?
You might have the Jeep axles but it would be cheaper (and a bunch less work) to install an Explorer axle, which would be stronger anyway.

I don't think the D35 wil be stronger than the D30 if they are running the same joints. Problem is the D35 requires some massaging to prevent binding in the axle window and center yokes. If you just slap it on you have a good chance of breaking it if you do any amount of wheeling. You go in a rut that bottoms the shaft in the window or lift both front tires popping over a bank with the pedal down and your yokes aren't clearanced it can go pop and you won't feel like you were wheeling it hard when it happened. If you take the time to grind the beam window and clearance the yokes then the D35 is the easier option.

???????? are they the same gears, if not the cheap just walked out the door plus a d35 will be better

i have been running 35's on the d28 for some years now, with no problems, but i don't take it too hard on the truck... i do about 95% of driving though on roads......

If it is a D35 rear axle it is a downgrade, the Ford 7.5 is better, and the 8.8 is better yet.

well if i do do a d35 i will prob have to get the 8.8 out of the from the explorer too so that all of the gears are correct. Will i also need the transfer case? Honestly how hard is the D35 swap. What do you think it will run on cost. Also i have to get my drive shaft shortened too? That's something i really cant do myself right? and i dont know of any shops around where i live to do this?
