Dana 28 swap to Dana 35 ??

I have the stx package 1987 ranger 4x4.
hard to keep u-joints and spindle bearings in it. New ones don't last any period of time and ive tried different brands.

So I have a 1990 with the Dana 35 that I want to install the complete Dana 35 unit in my 1987.

Question - 1st will it be worthwhile ? will the u-joints and spindle bearings hold up longer than the 28 ?
next question, will the 35 exchange without any modifying ?

I don't know about lasting longer but it's mostly plug and play. Driveshaft will probably need to be shortened and you'll need the steering linkage from the donor (tie rods, drag links etc)

Sent from my iPhone.

I have the donor vehicle and want to switch the complete front-end .
my 28 needs all axle joints and I must remove the front stump to get to the stubby shaft, so now will be a good time for the swap.
I will start today removing the 35
do u know how much needs to be cut off the front driveline ?

If you have the STX high-rider package with the bolt-on front drive shaft, instead of the one that slips into the transfer case you should be able to to just take the front shaft from the 90.

for those that have made the swap, can u say the spindle bearings, axle joints last longer than the 28 ? Or will it be the same o, same o ?

The D35 is bigger, better, stronger than the D28 in almost every way (the brakes are about the only same-sized major parts between them).

Info on the swap itself:

I don't believe a D35 ('90) driveshaft will work on a STX Highrider t-case, the front output on it has a much longer snout (= much shorter driveshaft). You'll likely still need to cut down the tube on your stock '87 shaft an inch or so and use that.

If you have the STX high-rider package with the bolt-on front drive shaft, instead of the one that slips into the transfer case you should be able to to just take the front shaft from the 90.

Sadly the STX "High-Rider" front shaft is NOT the same as the later D35/1354 shaft

Basically the U-joint and Double -Cardan assembly is SMALLER
and even uses unique smaller diameter bolts to hold it to the half-moon flange on the T-case
