does anyone know were i can buy a complete axle shaft with the ujoints assembled i thought just getting new would be better and easier than trying to rebuild the rusted shafts i have...thanks...Gary
A '97 would have what is often known as the Dana28/35 "hybrid" axle (it's mostly a D35, but has D28 guts inside the diff housing). Officially it is called a D28 though.
The inner axle shafts are unique to that axle, which was used from 1993-1997. Your only option will be to get junkyard shafts and put new u-joints in them if needed (or if yours just need u-joints, then easiest to just replace them. Rust on the shafts usually doesn't hurt anything unless it's gotten into the slip-yoke spline).
The other option would be to replace your diff with one from a real D35. D35 shafts are somewhat easier to come by (Bronco Graveyard I know sells at least some of the shaft components, they may have preassembled ones too, though I haven't checked).
a True Dana35 has the benefits of larger inner shafts, though the U-joints, wheel-bearings, stub shafts and locking hubs.
I'm in the process of gathering parts to swap a dana35 into my uncle's old Ranger,
an '87 STX Supercab, because it has a bad U-joint and a stretched yoke in the left outer of it's TRUE Dana 28 axle
there'd be far less to change if it had been previously upgraded to a D35/28 "hybred" whick already had "True D35" parts everywhere outboard of the inner U-joints...
