Hey guys,

I've read and seen that most people are upgrading the Dana 28 to the Dana 35 or better. However, I don't have the money or skill to do that right now. I have a broke RH stub shaft and u-joint. I want to replace both the inner and outer shafts, bearings, u-joints etc... Is there anyplace you can get the shafts new? I have found a few shafts at www.car-parts.com from salvage yard across the U.S. but none of them are new and none are close enuff for me to look at and make sure it is good. The axle is from a 1989 Ranger/Bronco II...Still not sure bout the gearing. I just bought it last night. :icon_hornsup:

If you live near the Fort Worth area I can point you to a couple good junkyards. Including one that sells you pull it axles for $50. As far as getting a new shaft you don't benefit any from buying new over used. If you are really set on it Automotive Driveline supply can make you one. They are the suppliers for a few local parts stores in my area, so you get to skip the markup.

If you can tear your D28 down enough to swap out a shaft, you can swap a D35 under there.

It's a bolt-in swap, aside from having to get the front driveshaft shortened 1" (which usually is only required if the truck isn't lifted at all).

yeah.. its an easy swap. just swap it out. you'll thank us later...

i'm on my 3rd or 4th hub for a d28 and already busted an axle shaft.. when on 30's. the last hub broke was on 33's but.. not the point! lol

For the price of new shafts and u-joints, you could pull a D35.

Or move up here and I'll cut you a deal on the one sitting in my garage.

I have a passenger side D28 shaft if I can find it... not new but usable...

I do wanna swap them out and I have a Ford genius for a friend but he is always busy....He's told me to swap it out but right now I just don't have the time or the money to do that...I will be tho as soon as I can. As for everyone trying to help with the shaft THANK YOU very much!! I apprecitate it all and I did find a re manned complete RH shaft assy for 106.00....So That is hopefully taken care of...But I would like to know where and how to get my hands on a D35 and bout how much that will cost me. Thx in advance. Also can you just buy a Drive shaft 1" shorter because mine doesn't have any lift on it yet.

i got my D35 for $75 a couple years ago. you're wasting time and money fixing the D28, especially if you're planning on lifting eventually.

having a driveshaft shortened at a fab shop will be much cheaper than buying a new driveshaft. shop around and you can probably get someone to do it for less than $50.

Pulled my 35 for $60 amd had my shaft shortened for $30.

Where do you guys get these free alignments at? (I assume they are free because nobody is mentioning them)

And how is everybody lucking out that their new axle doesn't need crosses, brake work, bushings, balljoints or tie rod ends?

Just find a used shaft and poke it in, put new crosses in it if the spirit moves you. U-pull-it type JY's around here usually have a couple D28 rigs lurking around. They probably won't charge anymore for just a shaft than you would pay for new brake pads for a D35.

Save your pennies and find a D35 to work over as time and money allows... if your luck is anything like mine you won't find a drop in and go ready one for any price. If money and time is tight an axle swap can blow your budget in a big hurry no matter how "bolt in" it is.

Unfortunately where I'm at, the closest place is 2.5hrs away....I'm working in BFE North Dakota.

That's exactly what I'm trying to say...It's gonna take me some time and I wanna make sure it's done right not me trying to hurry up and get it in there...LOL

Alignment done by me-free
Radius arms, brake calipers and pads are the same as the 28.
I did have to replace the ball joints after a couple wheeling trips.

If u are goin to keep small tries ( 31's ) no bigger then a d 28 willbe ok but if u plan on goin bigger that d 28 is going To be a money pit!! I think I replaced about 10 shafts before I swapped in a d44 and parts for the d 28 are getting hard to find in junk yards
