daily doubler build

here is another pic I found today....

Thanks again John. For the record, I made it up that earlier in the day. :D

Mud? What's that?

I've run a lot of bogs with the half doors. They do a pretty good job of keeping the crap out. Sure some mud gets flung on the dash and inside my windshield/rear window, but it doesn't completely destroy my interior. I just toss cheap ass seat covers on and go at it.

It's not a bog unless you need the windows to keep it out, haha. I've been halfway up my doors in mud, and higher in water several times. They seal very well until you get to the doors handles.....

Mud is gay anyways. :thefinger:

Since my slider was pushed up and I couldn't open my door, I pulled them off today.

Started playing around with some stuff to see what I might want to do for the next set. Here's a model of the old ones.

26.8lbs according to SolidWorks.

Here's a model I threw together that would better fit my needs. I plan to cut my rockers so the wing will be horizontal rather than angled like before. This has the wing about 1.5" wider than my old version, and the kicker is another 2 inches wider than that.

Model weight is right at 40.0lbs.

The rectangle is 2"x4" with .125" wall thickness. I may drop down to 2x3x.125 or 2x3x.1875 after I crunch some numbers. We'll see what the math reveals.

I'll be watching this... Cause I wanna make some sliders like that to. Right now my curve around the body. They LOOK great but they don't protect from trees or anything tall enough to hit the curve out of the door. But for my mall crawler they'll probably be fine! Lol. Turning against trees is what worries me. I won't see as many rocks and trails like yours does.

That's the reason for the kicker in mine as well. 90% of the time, I wheel with my tube doors, so I don't have to worry about the curvature of the door getting in the way. When that tree gets to my bed, that's another story.

The current design model starts the kick right where my door ends and the back of my cab would start. I need the extra width to try and keep the bed off the trees.

In that model, the widest point is 7.75" out from the edge of the rectangle.

I made mine just wide enough if I was square to a tree I could hit it and the tree would fold the mirror in but not take it off the side of the truck... On UA I seemed to be using the slider right at the excab area to do a lot of turning against tree's/rocks.

.

its jsut about all we got. our rock sections can normally be handled with a good set of 31's

my interior would be shot and I could only imagine the gremilins i would end up with in the electronics

I like the sliders, that's pretty much what my plan is but I'm going to use either 2x4 or 2x6 because the rockers are so far in.

I'd like to use 2x4 for the added sliding area, but if 2x3 will work and will be significantly lighter I may go that route. Hell I only had 1" schedule 80 pipe before. I guess I'm still open to a full tubular design as well. I just need to start crunching numbers so I have something to compare them with.

I guess I just don't try that hard with mud. lol. Being fully locked, if it takes more wheel speed than single low 2nd gear at 4k rpm, I give up and take the strap.

That being said, mud IS fun. I haven't got in any nasty stuff in a long time. The cleanup just isn't worth it.

Its not your doors you need to keep trees out of. Trust me.

That's a pretty good basis for design. I know how far they stuck out before, and their limitations. I'll see how far it would have to stick out for it to fit that criteria and go from there.

Did some rough measuring. I think a solid 5" to the outside of the wing will be sufficient. I went ahead and modeled a full tubular slider with a 5" wing and it came out lighter than the schedule 80 stuff I had before.

24.9lbs model weight.

I don't think round .120" wall tube is going to be sufficient for the main rail though. I'm going to try and figure out the FEA in SolidWorks so I can apply some loads and see the stress locations and deformations. Might take me a while to figure that out. haha

Well get to work!
