d44 steering question

If my question has been covered please post a link. I've searched and can't find it. Is it possible to fit up stock ford d44 steering on a narrowed axle, or am I better off fabing it myself or ordering one from somewhere like ruff stuff? Thanks. JTB

OP: You could make 77 and older bronco steering work, or if you trust your welds, cut down a full size tie rod on one end, hammer the sleeve on, and weld it. Wouldn't trust idea 2 very far, but it would work. No point in cutting down in sleeveing the tie rod, you can't beat ruffstuff's 1 ton steering for the price

Thanks farmer. I like the 1 tons. I've priced the stuff seperately and I don't think I can build steerin any cheaper than the kit.

I was originally going to do some hacked up BS steering, but I went ruffstuff and dont regret it a second. Well worth the money.

Call me what you will. Stupid questions (or those that could be answered with a tape measure or some well spent time) will get a stupid answer from me. It irritates me to no end that someone would rather post a question and sit and wait for an answer rather than doing the little bit of research necessary to find it for themselves.

If there is 6" of adjustment to bring the toe into spec it will work.......

BTW EB 44 TREs have a smaller taper. JBG sells bushings to adapt to the 150 knuckle

If I had the steering I coulda measured every thing and studied it to see if it could be hacked up to fit, but I don't. I got the axle without the steering. As for my stupid question, if you don't want to answer them then don't ****n answer them, how about that?

if you're gonna beat on the axle, i'd get some 1.5 dom and just make your own steering setup with TRE's or heims

I'm like him. I don't have the time or fabrication ability to "just figure it out". I'd rather post a question, if I can't find it in a search, and take some flaming for it. Rather than doing it twice.

I can build diesels like no tomorrow, but when I comes to fab work I'm a beginner.

I've read that if the truck is going to be n the road much that tre's are better than heims. Any opinions?

I honestly think T.R.E's are better for the street as well. What's nice about them is that they are greaseable. Altho I've never had a problem with heims wearing out with a lot of street/highway use. If you do decide to go w/ T.R.E's use the ruffstuff kit. They're chevy "1 ton" t.r.e's that use a 1.5 inch per foot taper. You will need to reem your knuckles out to fit them properly.

I run rodends on my truck that sees 20k street miles a year and wheeled every other weekend or so.

They are stronger than TRE IMO, but wear faster. But they are also only like 15 bucks each to replace. Once you have the bungs and jam nuts, the bare replacement rodends are dirt cheap. So if you have to replace them once a year, big deal.lol

FWIW, my rodends are not showing any signs of wear yet, and they have 35k on them.

And no ream required for rodends.

Ruff Stuff has tapered inserts for the knuckle. Do y'all reckon they would be as good as reaming the knuckles?
