d35 swap

what all would i have to do to swap out my dana 28 to a dana 35 i know its a striaght bolt-in what about the driveshaft?and my other question is when i go to lift can i still get the same lift for a dana 28 to lift the dana 35?

the driveshaft will have to be shortened, i think....
the lift kit is the same- just make sure you get good brackets (skyjacker) for the axle drops instead of the drop plate like the rough country lift has.

look in the tech library bro. and use the search feature. this swap is documented in A LOT of threads around here.
 
like 4.0 said, straight swap. lift is the same way. driveshaft needs to be shortened about 2 inches
 
ok i know that skyjacker makes the best lift kits but which company makes the highest suspension lift?and what usually breaks the most on the dana 28?the axle shafts?i know that the dana 35 has bigger axle shafts.And what year rangers or explorers can i get a real dana 35 out of?

Not 2". Only 1-1.5". I had mine shortened 1.25".
 
you dont have to shorten the drive shaft if you locate the correct oem unit.


if you swap a compete 4.0 setup....its just that. complete.
 
I don't think anyone said anything about swapping a 4.0:icon_confused:
 
if you have a m50d/a4ld, 1354 case, and swap in a d35 there is a driveshaft application for it.


the 4.0 swap was just the example.


generally speaking the donor d35 truck will not have the proper driveshaft on older retrofits, so it is easier just to mod what you have.

just not necessary.
 
Gotcha. I think its much easier to shorten the shaft if you don't want to upgrade the rest though.

idk what tcase i got its an 86 2.3l 5 speed and all i would have to do with the driveshaft is get it shortened right?
 
like mentioned many times the best bet is to shorten it if you dont have access to some different types of parts..

i dont remember the combination to use to avoid that exactly as it varies with the early stuff. putting the "case slip joint" on certain drive shafts allows for a bolt in. i have done it several times in the past, though some were with v8 swaps....that involve spring loading the slip joint in a "fixed" shaft to work with the 1350 case slip, so essentially you have two slips in one shaft.

but the c5 trans shaft worked ok in the a4ld application when not lifted. lifted it was too short.

the early fixed (bolted at the t case) shafts were usually only on factory lifted models....i say usually because i have seen quite a few different setups and matching shafts back then was always a challenge when i tore one up.
 
i'm thinking the 4.0 swap is the answer...ALWAYS! lol

on an 86? its a bw1350. shorten the shaft, yes. by exactly how much? no one will know but you, when you measure after the axle is in place.
 
1.35 inches is exactly what to shorten it on a stockish ride height truck.

so i would have to shorten the driveshaft with a d35 with stock height but if i lifted it the driveshaft would have to be long again?
