alright sorry for making a new thread about this i know about all the other threads, ive read them but i just keep getting confused an i just want to kno plan an simple if i get a dana 35 carrier out of a jeep grand cherokee. will it work to replace the welded carrier in the d 35 of my ranger.?

i found a buddy that has a d35 out of his old cherokee an i need to replace the carrier in my ranger cuz the prev owner welded the front. an i dont want to deal with blowing hubs an shafts.

The carrier will swap over as a whole unit.

It's only concerning "drop-in" style lockers does Jeep vs. Ford matter.
For example, if you want to put a Lockright into your Ford axle that has a Jeep carrier, you need a Jeep Lockright.

Remember your ring gear backlash will need to be checked after you put the new carrier in.

So then a Detroit full carrier locker for a jeep d35 would fit into my 91 d35 then right? Doesn't matter if the jeep is c clip or not? I would just have to run a c clip eliminator right?

The Detroit unit itself will physically fit, yes, although one issue I foresee is IF the detroit does not have a crosspin (non-c-clip), your c-clip eliminator spring might push the axle too deep into the carrier, causing the axle seal to ride up onto the rough unmachined part of the shaft. I have not verified if this actually is the case though (a C-clip Detroit for sure won't have this issue though).

From the pictures it looks like it has the same style cross pin as my 8.8 detroit.

That looks like the c-clip unit. No worries there (although it does look a little rusty). The end of the shaft will just rest against the pin :icon_thumby:

I'm the person selling that and it came out of a Jeep Dana 35 that was a non c-clip but I dont know if you can or cant use it in a Ford Dana 35.

I dont know much about lockers. If I had to buy one it would be an ARB air locker.

I think my 7.5 is posi. from the factory, I go around truns and most of the time the inside tire barks at me. Had it apart to change once to change the rear seals and it wasnt an open diff I'm sure of that, and its not the original rear end from the truck, came out of an 84 extened cab ranger that had a 2.8 5 speed in it. Wish I had grabbed the 5 speed tranny and manual t-case for $250 bucks when I had the chance now I'm kicking myself.

what about the carrier break on jeep d35's?

I forgot about that, if it's the 3.31down D35 carrier, it will not work with any gear ratio in the Ford axle. Fortunately the vast majority of them are the 3.55up carrier (and will work in the Ford axle even with 3.27 gears).

Also, a c-clip diff can be used in a non-c-clip axle, but usually not the other way around. I suspect the non-c-clip D35 Detroit would've been discontinued because of this, and is why it had the c-clip unit.

so can a jeep dana 35 carrier and gears go into a ford front dana 35 ttb??

The carrier can if it is a 3.31 and numerically higher will fit. Jeep d35 gears will not fit a 90-97 TTB D35. They will fit the 98+ IFS D35 housing.

Many of the jeeps with standard transmissions came with 3.07 gears from the factory.
