im going to look for some 3.73 or 4.10 gears for my 5.0 t18 ranger. the explorer 3.27's wont cut it anymore with the 33's on it.

when junkyarding, how do you identify an explorer with a limited slip front d35? if the door tag codes for 4.10 LS, does that mean just the rear is LS, or both axles are?

did they ever make explorers with front limited slip? i dont remember the codes from when i built this truck years ago, but i believe both front and rear were limited slip....but its been many years and im not so sure what i put in it now other than both axles were from a 92 explorer.

They never put LS in the front diff. Given the people driving explorers, that was probably a good decision on Ford's part. Having an LS in the front diff makes it not want to steer in the snow.

I remember hearing something about front L/S in Explorers a while back actually. I don't remember where, but somebody found one in a wrecking yard too. I want to say it was AllanD, but don't quote me on that. Even if it wasn't him, he'd probably know where one is if they do exist though.

It was probably installed afterward (a Jeep D35 L/S unit fits the front D35 as well).

The only RBVs to have front L/Ss were a very few mid-80s models (D28 only)

Mmm, ok I guess I was just spreadin rumors then. I was wondering if Jeep units fit too since the Lock-Right in my D35 originally was in a Jeep.

That answers my question right there...:yahoo:

So when I remove the LS from my ZJ, I know where its going...

I keep hearing a jeep L/s will fit into a front d35, so how come nobody aswered my question when I asked which d35 carrier?. they made the d35's in c-clip and none c-clip. Which one fits? If you don't know don't answer cause I'm not going to pull my front end apart again to find the one I have won't fit.

Well, all the Jeep rear D35s I've ever seen were C-clips. Right side in the Ranger D35 is a C-clip. So if the planets align correctly, I will pull the LS carrier from my Jeep, I have a standard carrier with a lockright lunchbox locker to replace it with. I hope to have a spare RBV drive beam and carrier to work with and fit things into soon.

I don't think there is much difference between c-clip or non, unless spline count is different.
Possibly a bit more room inside at the axle ends on the c-clip version.

If you go with a clipless type, use one of the clip eliminator techniques described elsewhere on the board.

What's critical is spline count and shaft diameter.

After some comparison, (measurements and checking out jeep sites) I headed to the closest u-pull and grabbed the first ls I found that was ready to run, Very happy with the results. Nowhere near as bad in snow as most people claimed it would be, DOES tend to slip you sideways on ice though, not too hard to get used to.

I have LS on both ends and the explorer is almost unstoppable. For $35 I have no complaints.

Ken.

Edit: have developed a problem though, got smacked dead center on the passenger wheel and messed something up inside, now if I lock a hub it only rotates 3/4 turn it clunks and locks up. think I popped something loose.

Hey roger, I work on a lot of jeeps around here and I have only seen one d35 that is c-clip, I have that axle in fact. Could be area related. The l/s from that axle is sitting in my shop and is either going into my son's jeep or the front of my exploder. Whenever I can find out which one it will fit into. My son has dib's on it though so it might be a while.
