Cylinder misfire and other issues.

I've been chasing an issue for a few weeks now on my 3.0 Ranger, 2001, 160k mi.

I have a check engine light that reads as a cylinder 1 misfire. The engine runs rough for the first minute or so when cold then runs fine. I've replaced plugs and wires and checked for vacuum leaks, finding one, all of which alleviated the problem to some extent but not completely. If I clear the check engine light, the problem goes away for 2 to 4 days then returns.

I also have a raspy squealing sound coming from the water pump area (which was replaced about 9 months ago), and I don't know if that's related. It comes and goes on cold/damp days.

I was thinking fuel pump or filter, and the EGR valve was also suggested as a problem area.

This is driving me nuts. Please help!

If your getting a specific misfire code for # 1 cylinder, you need to check the injector as well, you could swap it to another cylinder and see if the problem moves with it. It would be wise to do a Fuel Pressure test as well. Filter nor the pump will not just cause a miss on one cylinder in the engine. EGR is a possibility for a poor idle, but I would rule out the other stuff first.

You can also swap the wires at the coil pack with cyl 1 and cyl5. clear the code and if the problem moves to cylinder 5 then the coil pack is a probable cause replace the coil will solve that problem. if it stays at cylinder one i would look at the injetor, injector circuit and compression comparision among two or more cylinders. But the most common issue i have log where coil pack failures.

Good luck Rocketalpha keep us posted.

The egr would set a code and it would run like crap on all cylinders, but you can rule that out by pulling the vac line and plugging it with your finger and if it runs better thats your issue.

Very useful. I'll start with the injector and work it from there. Thanks!

Is this really possible because it seems like it would change the firing order.
