My brothers 2000 Ford Ranger has the terrible issue of a misfire that we keep chasing. I have done quite a bit of looking on Google and this forum on the mysterious cylinder 4 misfire.
Symptoms:
-When idling it tends to run rough and not exactly as it should, it seems to actually shake, not precisely a misfire. When under load it really jerks when it misfires. When putting acceleration on the engine while in park it doesn't miss either.
Originally we replaced the plugs about 10,000 miles ago with autolites. Then it began to misfire, so we replaced the coil pack. Ran fine for 3 weeks, then began to misfire again, so then we heard that autolites tend to run terrible in Fords so we put new OEM motorcraft plugs back into the truck, ran well for 3 weeks and misfired again. There is nothing on the plugs, no fouling, no exessive burning of the electrode. The truck burns and loses no anti freeze currently. About 5000 miles ago the valve cover gaskets were replaced along with the intake gaskets by our mechanic to stop an issue with the antifreeze being burnt in the engine. So currently the engine is beautiful except the cylinder number 4 misfire code.
20,000 miles ago the fuel filter was replaced and it was REALLY nasty, which leads me to believe that it may be an injector.
The truck currently has 103,000 miles.
Any thoughts or ideas would be much appreciated.
