I have a owned '98 4x4 with 4.0 for a little over 1 year, bought with 208600 miles, over approx 1500 miles it has developed an engine noise, now getting CEL light on & can't get it inspected, originally 2 codes came up, Maf & cyl #1 miss, removed & cleaned Maf succesfully as truck seemed to run better, then removed #1 plug, cleaned & tested, checked wire which:sad: seems OK, cleared CEL & 0301 code comes back, not sure how to proceed?

you need to put a new plug in there not just clean it, there is no way of know if the plug is bad by looking at it. hold the end of the wire up to a metal peice of the engine and verify there is spark. try running a can of chemtool or sea for through the engine and some fuel injector cleaner, but could be a burnt exhaust valve valve.

can you define the noise?

or just take the plug out of the motor and check if there is an arc while is running

I cleaned & tested plug

which means I checked & tested the plug for spark & it does have spark, I believe the noise is a lifter noise, it's gotten louder over the year & it doesn't sound good but engine runs strong, does not smoke or consume oil. I have disconnected the battery again & then driven approx 15 miles, as of now the light is off & scanner reads no DTC stored, I think that means I've driven enough, just need to get thru inspection so it can be used when needed as this is not a daily driver, hopefully CEL will not come on & I can get it inspected, will post when I do

CEL stayed off long enough to get thru inspection

but came on as soon as I left shop, still 0301, cyl. 1 misfire, will try sea foam but I think lifter/cam is worn & may start looking for used engine to install next summer

what he siad^^^^^^..

what to do for a misfire

-Run bottle of tecron though tank. change FF if you can

-replace spark-plug with a NEW one...lets be real here you can get one for $2 if you had to.

-swap the wire with another wire and see if the misfire follows it.

spark plug sparks, wire is good

this is not an electrical problem, I have run seafoam thru the tank but have not done so in the crankcase yet, lifter noise is quite loud but engine has power, other than noise my only problem is cel coming on & giving 0301 code, once again, plug sparks nice bright spark, already swapped plug wire

OK then if you are positive it is the noise coming from your head..lets wrap this thread up........pull the heads or pull the motor.........nuf ced......:icon_cheers:

I was just looking for a way to get thru inspection

it seems there is a narrow window when the codes have been checked but 0301 does not register. this was the purpose I posted for & now if anyone else has this problem it may help them

You should at least pull that valve cover and inspect.

Might be evident if you start it or crank it over with the valve cover removed.

I'm posting this some time after my last post for others with same problem, problem was worn rocker, replaced # 1 & 2 rockers & P/Rods. engine ran much better, no noise & no CEL
