My credo
I may not know what the future holds, but I know who holds the future.
2002 Ford Ranger Supercab XLT 4x4, 4.0 V6
For a while, I've had a light "ticking" sound from the left front when I turn the wheel tightly to the left. Recently, this has become a loud knocking sound. CV replacement, yes? Other thoughts?

[Just realized this should have probably been posted in the 4x4 System Forums. Admin; please move if you agree.]

The more common issue with the 2001-2011 Ranger 4x4s is a ticking from the propeller joint on the front drive shaft, left side, where it bolts to the transfer case
It is a "CV" type joint

But yes each axle on the front has a CV joint
If you jack up the frame on that side, so wheel hangs down low, that will put CV at a pretty good angle, spin the wheel to see if you get the ticking noise
You can also turn the wheel and spin

And check the propeller joint at the same time

If it gets louder in turns it is a CV joint, if it stays consistent then it is a pro shaft joint.
