Cutting cab and bed for stereo hook up!

I am thinking of cutting my bed and cab so I can put two 12" sub woofers . Do you think it's a good Idea or bad idea? Its a 1986 ford ranger reg cab 2.9 4x4. Thanks!

if you think you need that much bass, then its a good idea. but ask yourself, are you gonna be pissed if you mess it up or it doesnt come out the way you want?

or how pissed you will be when you can't load any shit in the bed of the truck, and remeber you will need to get a tonnoeu(sp) cover to keep the weather out.

if he uses a accordian gasket and seals it up against the back of the bed and then adds a layer of bedlinder to the box, it SHOULD make it weatherproof.

The tonneau isn't a necessity, tho its not a bad idea for theft/stealth reasons. The seal between the box and the cab should presumably be watertight... Some people use an accordion style strip between the two, but using a metal bracket and any sort of strip seal will work and is relatively cheap. As far as the box itself being weatherproof, the subs and the port(s) if you're going that route should be aimed inside the cab, and whatever is exposed in the bed should be either stained with an outdoor wood stain or my preference would be for bedliner.

then you should do it.

i'd make sure you have alot of knowledge on the subject first.. not saying you don't, but this could potentially really F up your truck.


do alot of research, don't do anything cheaply or temporarily.


oh, and make sure you take alot of pictures, and write a walkthrough.

Dude. Don't cut up your truck, it's one of the nicer ones around here! I would imagine that it would ruin its resale value as well...I wouldn't buy something that's been cut like that.

Also keep in mind that the bed and cab move independantly from each other.

If you need a big system I recommend a Supercab

thats what the accordian gasket is for. it still allows the bed and cab to flex independently, but seals the gap between the two.

Welding the box? What are you planning on making it out of? Metal isn't used for sub enclosures because it resonates too much and would sound horrible... Point in fact good mids already cause too much resonance in the sheet metal in your doors, which is why sound deadening and mounting rings are used in good installs. And I'm in the camp that says to go for it! Its custom, its different, and I'm sure if you do it right, it will put a big smile on your face whenever you listen to it.

Im only starting out with a single 12, and im doing it...
I have my enclosure already designed, and the sub and amp sitting in my bedroom. Just have to pick up some MDF, and accordion seal.

why dont you get the kicker cvt subs? the mounting depth for those are like 4 inches.

lol the point was not to discourage you...just saying that it's easier to remove a box from behind your seat or whatever than try to patch two huge holes in your truck.
