custom rear suspension

I've searched everywhere with no hits so here goes. I have a '85 ranger lb 2wheel drive with a thunderbird turbo eng and t-5. I've been running it for 6 years with no problems. Now it has a issue with the rear suspension. the shackle hangers are rusted plus the 7.5 posi has quit. I want to change it to a 8.8 while I under there. I remember reading a few years ago about swapping in an independant rear out of either a mustang cobra or a late model t-bird. I can't seem to find the artical now , but I did read it on one of these forums. my question is has anyone on here ever read or know about this swap. any info to point me in the right direction would be appreciated.
