I had an issue with my Ranger the other day. It is a 1999 XLT 4.0 manual 4x4. Driving home on the highway with the cruise on, it just started accelerating after going up a slight hill. I hit the brake and the cruise light on the dash went out but it continued to accelerate. It would not slow down with the brake. Put it into neutral and the tach showed it was at 5000 RPMs. I got it off the road into the ditch and started trying to get it figured out. The cruise would disengage electrically but the cable would not disengage. One time I pushed the throttle all the way closed and it disengaged and another time I hit the cruise control actuator assembly with a hammer and it disengaged. For right now I have it disconnected at the throttle.

Is this a common problem that people have seen? I tried searching and did not find this issue. I like having my cruise but not when it is not letting the throttle go back to idle. Have a good day everyone.

I haven't seen this issue myself, but it sure sounds like the servo has some issues.

I'd pop the cable off at the servo end first and make sure it isn't sticking, the cables are cheap, about $30.

The servo is closer to $300.
