Cruise control won't engage

Hey guys, I have an '02 FX4 with a 4.0 engine. Lately my cruise has not been engaging and when I press the steering wheel button to set it, I only get a click and the light in the dash goes on and off very quickly with no cruise operation. Have replaced the switches in steering wheel and the brake switch but still no go. Any help is greatly appreciated.
