Just before I purchased my used '87 4x4 Ranger, the owner replaced the power door regulators. The problem is the drivers side door lock operates only when open. When closed, nothing happens.

Any clue as to why this would be?

Sounds like it might be a break in one of the wires; if so it's likely in the harness in the door jamb that heads up into the fender. As the copper wire strands usually break inside the plastic insulation, this can be tough to spot by just looking at the wires. Try opening the harness, and then bending each wire; you're looking for one that bends in one spot, instead of bending evenly.

Thanks my friend! I found not one but two cracked wires right where you said they'd be. I cut them and soldered short extensions in place and the problems are now fixed!

Good deal! Glad to hear that you got it squared away.
