Crazy Gauges

I have a 95 4x4 3.0l with 78,000 miles. For the last couple months the oil pressure gauge and temp gauge randomly start swinging from one end of the gauge to the other and the battery light will come on. The oil pressure moves around a lot more than the temp but they both do it. The volt and fuel gauges work normal with no flucuation. Any help is appreciated. Thanks in advance

Sounds like an issue with the wiring going to that cluster of gauges. Could be a bad ground going to that group.

Left side, right side and center all have their own connectors with their own ground circuit. so one side can work fine and the rest will act up.

Are the grounds in the main cluster harness or are they seperate grounds? i thought there were left right and middle but whats crazy is the oil gauge is on the right side, temp is on the left and batt lite is in the center. lol

I believe each section has it's own common ( I don't know if it's a ground or + voltage ). So it's possible you have an issue with the wiring going to those particular gauges/lights.

Do you have a EVTM? I can get a picture of the page showing the cluster wiring when I get home from work. I have one for a '96, '96 has the same cluster.

well i checked all the grounds and they are still acting crazy

It’s either a problem with the cluster or not a problem with the cluster. This... we must determine.


If you have a spare cluster, you can swap it. See what happens.

Otherwise. The classic pita. Intermittent electrical issue. Get you meter out and start probing around.

Drive around with the dash all opened up, and start shaking the wiring going to the cluster. see what happens.
