Bare with me, this is going to be rough and probably not even possible...

Start with one IFS 4x4 Ranger insert one FWD*4.2 V6 longitudely, but here's the kicker, KEEP THE TRANSAXLE. So you have a longblock that is exactly like it is when it's transversely but mounted longitudely. Then modify the output shaft to connect to driveshafts. Use the stock IFS axle, locked with 4:10's, except convert to coilover, and for the rear use the IRS axle, also locked and 4:10's, from a new explorer and run coilovers.*

So in theory, you have a full time AWD Ranger that is just plain awesome and unique.*

It's been done on several rockcrawlers with the engine/transaxle mounted behind the driver - sooooo have at it.

Xtreme 4x4 had a buggy that used a Honda engine & transaxle. It looked pretty slick!

I think the major problem with that idea is room. It will work, just gotta space the engine and tranny back far enough for it to connect to both front and rear diffs. It will works best as a mid-engine configure.

just remember, there will be no high range.so it's all just low speed stuff.

How about a 4.6L V8, M50D-R2, BW4404 AWD t-case? 100 times easier than trying to use a longitudinal engine...

How about you get a late '90's 5.0 explorer awd drivetrain, bolt it into the ranger, and plug in the harness... There is a write up on here, and is arguably one of the easiest v8 engine swaps ever, for a fuel injected vehicle anyways. You end up with a 5.0 awd ranger, which would be badass.

CRACKHEAD!!!! LOL Sound good seriosly. I saw in a mag where they took a CRV drivetrain and welded the AWD diff, put it under an integra and before installing the front DS. they test drove to test the welds, Drifting a RWD integra SICK!. Then it was all wheel drive. BUt thats a bangup idea for a ranger. You could just swap a newer exploder drivetrain under a ranger. Not to try and make thigns easy or anything.(see i even mispelled to try and maintain difficulty)

cause that would be too easy...plus can you say you have a longitudinally transaxle? no, I think not!

how so? if any thing there would be no low?

the front wheel drive transaxle already has the reduction gears in it that you would find in a rear or front diff.so the output in fourth gear(that would normally be one to one)is now reduced to around three to one.this is the output that is going to the diffs that also have reduction gears.so it's always like driving with a 3:1 low range that you can't shift out of.

oooooh...never thought of that

ya,that's why this setup is popular with the rockcrawlers-they don't need a high range, and the low with this is usually pretty good:icon_thumby:
