Crawlin's Build Thread

Its better than the stock 4.0 gearing, but a doubler would make it even more noticeable.

1st gear x LO Tcase x LO Doubler x 4.10 R&P = Final Crawl

Stock 4.0 M50D
3.40 x 2.48 x 2.48 x 4.10 = 85.74:1

Hybrid 4.0/2.5 M50D
3.72 x 2.48 x 2.48 x 4.10 = 93.81:1

hey plum whats a hybrid 4.0?

think it's worth doin if i plan on runnin a doubler?

the gap between more and enough never closes:icon_thumby:

I made a thread about it a while back just search it. It is basically just lower gear ratios in the 4.0 trans.

sounds worth looking into

dropped my 30ft long gas tank and 20+ lbs of skid plate out from the truck
the newer BII tank is in, no leaks.

ye olde submarine gas tank:shok:

Bling Bling, Cases assembled, the whole unit is heavy, thats not the trans I plan on using but I wanted to get a feel for how things would look, I need to track down all the parts to make the shifters work. Meanwhile Im thinking about a 1" body lift and some new body mounts, mine are beyond shot.

Im curious to see how the shifters work out. Im not far behind with my doubler. Do you plan on trying to run two levers or something like 4x4Junkie with a push/pull rod to shift the doubler?

Im looking at running two levers in stock location, threaded rod and gokart rod ends. I wanted to keep my center console or I could have gone another way.

Got all the fittings done, and put in a sight tube while I was at it. Had to grind the rear case just a little rounded off the edges on the crawlbox vent fitting to make things work. Pretty tight clearances between the cases shifters and driveshaft. Grabbed a '90 aerostar speedo cable at the junkyard, started crossmember and the shifters are almost done.

Sorry for the slow updates, trying to do a little every day to stay on track. I pulled back the carpet and started mockup, going to have to notch the trans tunnel a just a little bit. Also these OE knobs are kinda bulky and rub, Ill have to bend the shifter rods apart or use something different. No heims yet so no linkage pics.

Ground off the rest of the rivets holding what was left of my gas tank skid and carrier bearing support.

Are the 2.9 M50D and the 4.0 M50D the same length?? Just want to know if I will have to rework everything when I do the 4 liter swap.

Yeah the shifter is in the exact same place. The trannies are identical.
