I have a '98 3.0 4x4. I've owned the truck just over 4 years now and have put probably 4-5 slaves in it. Everytime they just start leaking after some use. It gets wheeled about once a month and always gets cleaned very well afterwards. I always make sure there isn't any mud in the bellhousing and whatnot. I've never had any problems bleeding the clutch or changing them at all. Just wondering if anyone else has this problem. It wouldn't be so bad if I didn't have to pull the damn trans everytime. I've gotten to know where and what size every bolt is and can have it apart and back together in less than 4 hours haha.

they do suck, but are you using one from ford or some crappy one from napa?

That's definitely not normal. As asked above, where are you getting your slaves?

I think I'd shoot my truck if I had to put a new slave in every year.

ive had a reybestos one in my truck for close to 3 years... never had a problem.

I've got a spare laying around that I'm probably going to use since money is tight, I'll check and see if I can identify he brand.

I noticed that the slave available from Ford, at least the one for my Ranger, has a neoprene bellows which protects it from external contamination. You might want to check it out.

Dont know about other dealerships, but at my local Ford parts counter, the slave they sell is a Dorman unit. I found that one of the local parts stores (Partsource) sells the EXACT Dorman slave, same numbers and all, for 70$ cheaper.

Had good luck with Dorman slaves....

Well hopefully my spare isn't a chinese POS because it needs to be done this weekend. Driving without a clutch blows pretty hard. Although if I could find one like cocoasranger was talking about I'd be tempted to spend money I don't really have.

I installed one for a friend on his 2006 fx4, not sure if its the same as yours, but i got it thru a friend at napa (very very good discount) and it had the blue neoprene or whatever boot that sealed it pretty nicely, so far he hasnt had any problems with it, and its been about 6 months commuting very far everyday. if you are interested, i have the box at my shop right now with the part number on it, and i can get it for you with the discount and ship it to you

here it is off napa's site
