I mucked the install of my sensor and want to go through it again from step one but ive misplaced the plastic install tool that came with it. Is it totally necessary or can i work around it. Thanks!

I have managed to install the sensor correctly without the tool, but only with the engine out of the vehicle, and you kind of have to have a good feel for where it goes already.

I would say give it a try, just be very careful as the air gap is only a few .010" of an inch IIRC. Don't let it touch the damper, but if the engine doesn't start or runs poorly you will need to move it in closer.

crank sensor

Success! I decided to "tidy" up the garage a bit and found the install widget. Put the sensor in,turned the key and it fired right up. Thanks for the tips!

Cool, glad to hear you got it.

As momma always used to say, if you can't find something, stop and clean the house, it will show up.
