Cracking into the rods/cam...

Wanted to see if it's worth while for a little open heart surgery to clean up and lube the pushrods. My ranger's been making a lot of noise from the engine, especially on cold start and I think it's the pushrods and/or valves. Wanted to know how many people have done this, is it very tricky?
