Cracked head help

Tha begining; just before I deployed to Afghanistan, my Ranger started to miss and bog down as I was driving for about 30 seconds and then stop and go back to normal driving. Since I have been gone, my brother drove the truck for a little bit and he had replaced the plugs and wires, I had done that about 2 yrs ago when I got back from Belgium. Now my brother did some more checking and is saying the head is cracked. I have found engines for 4-500 bucks, to include the SOHC 4.0.

What would be the issue switching to the SOHC? I have heard that they are less trouble and more power and tq. Is it worth it to put heads, used or new, on tha OHV? I need this truck running before I get back this fall, please help.

tech section has plenty on 4.0-4.0, some like sohc some like ohv. how are the mountains treatin ya? i remember while i was in iraq some base in afghan almost got over ran, and somehow they allowed a us soldier to just randomly walk off base. must of been a national guard unit.

Havent had the chance to go to the mountains, we are down in Kandahar which is all city. Cant wait to get outta this shit hole though, less than 90 days! I do know about tha COP tha was overran though, most of tha stuff was still there when they got back, tha ragheads just took food n shit, nothing technical, they don't know how to use that shit! LOL If you know of anyone that is good with tha OHV engines and is willing to do an overhall on tha top end, please let me know, I need my baby runnin again. I found a guy that would do it for just under 1K, is that a descent price?
