i have a 1998 4.0 ranger (droped a rod ) and i pulled the motor got a later model motor from a salvage yard new motor has a two wire cps old motor had a three wire cps can i put the three wire cps from the old motor on the new motor

Yes, you have to.

3 wire is a hall effect sensor, that is what your computer will "understand".
2 wire is a variable reluctance sensor, your computer wouldn't "understand" the signal
And visa versa

thank you very much for your reply. can this be done without pulling the shaft? i have to have my truck running by 4pm sunday

No, You have to pull the whole cam synchro unit out, and swap it as far as I know, you can look at both to see if whole top of the unit comes off.

You can pre-time the engine by rotating crank until the VR synchro is where it should be, #1 TDC, then pull it and swap in the HE synchro.

Engine will run without CPS, CPS is used to fine tune Sequential fuel injection for better MPG and performance

thanks agin ron you have been a big help
