I bought a 2000 Ranger with 112K miles. It is a reg. cab short bed, 4 cyl. 5 spd. 2wd. Mileage considered, the truck is in good condition.
Except for one (two) thing(s)....

When I press the brakes the motor looses power slightly. When I turn on the turn signal, left or right, the motor looses power slightly. It is more of a surging. It is not a significant amount of power loss, but just enough to make you notice. Also, the speedo needle drops and rises at the same time. As soon as the brakes are released or the turn signal switches off, all is good again.
The "ABS" warning light also comes on after the truck has been started and the brakes are pressed. I dont think this is related but it may be a relevant detail so to someone who "knows".

I replaced the alternator and battery simply because of the mileage. I was hoping this might help but it didnt.
I disconnected the wiring connection for the lights under the bumper, but that didnt change anything.
I disconnected the upper brake lamp on the cab and that didnt help.
I pulled the fuse for the turn indicators and that didnt help.
I cant find any indications of a short in the wiring.

My local Ford dealer ran a diagnostic and no error codes were recorded. They also said that the multi-function switch should not be the cause of this because it is isolated from the ignition. I ordered one anyway. It is supposed to be here tomorrow.

I know my dealer is knowledgeable, but does anyone think the M.F. switch could be the culprit ?

Could it have something to do with the brake lamp switch on the pedal ?
Is there any other relays that could be checked / replaced ?
I suspect a ground may be loose somewhere but I dont know where to look ?
Could the instrument cluster cause this ?
Any other ideas on what could be causing this ?
Anyone else ever encountered this ?

Sorry so many questions. This is just all of the "crap" rollin around in my head......

I figured it out. It was moisture in the wiring connection that goes through the floorboard under the seat. I dried it out and the problem has ceased.
