Cost Benefit Analysis: New Paint Job

Hi Folks,

Anyone here ever do a cost, benefit analysis on repainting their Ford Ranger to increase the re-sale value? I have enough paint left over from a previous job so paint cost will be minimal. I am also doing all the body work myself. Any help/advice/comments will be greatly appreciated regarding repainting or other improvements to increase the value. I am the original owner with all the maintenance records. Thank you in advance for your help.

Upstream guy, even. Fantastic. I am putting together some pictures and will upload probably tomorrow. It's been a great truck and really hate to see it go. Please let me know if you or anyone else is interested in buying it, of course after the paint job.

If you can do it yourself it may be worth it, if you have to pay a shop, it most likely wouldn't be worth it and you'd never be able to recoup that kind of money in a vehicle sale...local body shop quoted me $5600 to repaint my 88 Bronco 2 a couple years ago. I guess if it was a classic car maybe, but certainly not worth it. I'll be doing a repaint on it myself I think with an HVLP gun and Rustoleum paint.

Also consider for the dyi angle.... if you are not skilled in painting, your truck will have new paint but will look like, well, a dyi paint job. If you are keeping the truck, this won't be an issue, but if you are looking to "increase the value" by claiming new paint, this could actually backfire. many people would rather have faded factory paint than a paint job that a non professional applied, so it could lower the price.

If it is just peeling clear coat on a few panels, it may only be several hundred to fix just the panels that need it, or if it is just dull, a hundred or so bucks can have a detail shop wax and claybar the paint where it looks really good. you will be more likely to recoup that cost in a sale than messing with repainting the truck.

I am one of those that 97Ranger posted about. Just me, personally...if I were looking at a 20 year old Ranger I would walk away from a DIY paint job. Would rather buy one with faded paint/good body, that I could have painted to my preference.
Pro paint job...you'll never get your investment back. 2000 Rangers, standard cab XL with your mileage in nice shape with good paint run from 2-4 grand, but it's a buyers market cause there are thousands of them out there. Even Edmonds/Kelly Blue Book lists a 2000 Ranger from around 500 to 2500 $, depending on equipment, local, condition.
Yours being a one owner with all records is what a person like me would jump on, even with faded paint. But if you spend a grand on a quicky paint job, and tack on 1-2 grand extra... I'd pass.
Things I would be looking at are condition of engine compartment, "cobbed togather" repairs or original, condition of tires, frame condition, shocks, and of course driveability...any weird noises, clunks, ect.
Basically, can I get in it and drive 500 miles or does it need repairs just to make it 20 miles home.

Plasti dip is a good option as well. My 1996 will be getting dipped when the body work is finished.

Not the greatest "paint" job on earth, but better than what's on it now...

I'm with the "don't paint it" crew: If I look at a used vehicle that has new paint.....I'm wondering what they are trying to cover up.

I'm in agreement with Alan-nc. New paint is a potential indicator of a previous wreck. It might make more people walk than stick around for more information. Especially if you are changing colors.
