Coolant Temp Sensor

Searched around a bit. Could someone give me a few problems that would come from a bad CTS? I notice my temp guage stoped working and my 2.9 has idleing when its cold.
 
Theres two. The one that involves the gauge has one wire going to it. Its over around the thermostat housing..a little to the right (driverside)

As far as the actual ECT, its above of the thermostat housing. Has a plug with two wires.

If you're gauge is dead, try the 1 wire sensor and wiring 1st.
