Coolant leek

I have discovered a small coolant leek at the back of the valve going into the heater core. For better orientation; there are 2 medium size hoses going through the passenger side fire wall, 1 has a weird valve thing with a wire attached and the other is just a hose, this is in the engine compartment! The fluid is leaking out the back of this valve at a " faster then slow pace" if you know what I mean. I was just wondering if this part is truly some sort of valve the controls the flow of coolant into the heater core or just what it goal is. If more description needed I can surly take a pic or 2. Any help would be greatly appreciated thanx

i think newer rangers have a valve that stops water from entering the heater core untill you either turn the heater on or the engine warms up, i'm not sure which.

do you *need* it? probably not.

Yah I don't think it needs to be there at all but its there and its leaking and, that just sucks. I have to take a closer look it could possibly be the hose on the side is cracked or something. The leek is on the bottom where I can't see.... isn't that always the case! Does any one know what one of these valves would cost I can't find one at any online store. Thanx

Mine was leaking on my '96 about a year ago. $20-$30 and a few minutes and it was fixed. Local part store had it in stock.

It is the Heater Control Valve. It stops coolant flow through the heater core when the climate control is in the "Off" position. On my 96' 2.3L, there are 2 hoses to the heater core and 2 hoses going to the engine. With a small vacuum line connected to the controller. It is a simple fix. Drain some coolant, disconnect the hoses, and install the new part. A 15 minute job.

Yeah, that's all it is. On Learjet's truck you might get away with bypassing it, on your 07, I'd replace it. Part of the idea is to cut off that coolant flow and get the engine up to temp faster. The 07's computer might be sensitive enough that bypassing the valve might make it throw t-stat codes.

It's relatively cheap too, I think from Ford it's only $25.
