coolant leaking from firewall side of heater core (what is that opening for anyways?)

I replaced my old heater core with a new one (spectra) and since then noticed when I park after driving, it leaks coolant for awhile.

it looks like its coming out of the opening down on the firewall...would too much coolant cause that? Whats that opening even for?

I also see the insulation where the heater core pipes stick out is wet. doesn't seem like its coming from the hose clamp though. could the pipe or core itself be cracked from vibration or just being a cheapo?

There are no overheating issues and heater/ac both work fine. Seeking some feedback before I start digging in.

Is your coolant level getting lower or staying the same? It could just be residual from when you changed it.

The lower hole is a drain for the box. If you have AC you get condensation, if you only have heat you eventually get a heater core leak. That drain lets the water out to the outside instead of into your carpets.

Get a pressure tester, or just let the engine run until it is hot, and see if you can find the actual leak itself.

I thought it might just be condensation, but looked like there was coolant in it...good call Ill take a good look around after the next drive
