coolant leak

Hey all,

I have a 1990 Ranger 4.0 that started leaking coolant. Initially I thought it was the water pump, but I replaced it and now it has a new pump, gasket, and torqued. My thermostat is also newer (done last spring).

As I get further into it, it looks like the leak is coming from the motor. Behind where the thermostat housing bolts on. I haven't been able to get under and really see yet. Maybe an inspection mirror will reveal more. Is there a sensor or anything that could be leaking or am I looking at pulling motor apart and replacing a gasket or two?

Thanks for any input and ideas. Could it be the lower intake manifold gasket? That is somewhat where I am leaning, but am unsure.

Not 100% sure......if that's the head on the left, and the intake at top right......venture a guess as to either the intake gasket or a head gasket. Hopefully the intake!

on the upper right is the lower section of the intake.

I can't see in there well enough to know but there isn't any coolant in oil or oil in coolant so I am hopeful it isn't the head gasket.

I've just never had this motor apart that far and well haven't had to really work on this motor ever so I guess now is the time I get to start :yahoo:

Had a similar issue long ago with the other half's Jeep XJ 2.8. Turned out to be the intake and not the head. Hope it all goes well!

Just to update this.

It ended up being the lower intake gasket. It has been running strong since I replaced it.

The job wasn't too daunting. Quite a lot of cleaning was required as there was a ton of dirt and grime and what-not. It was easy to tell where the leak was coming from once I pulled the intake off. The gasket was toast!

Thanks for the replies, help, and letting me bounce ideas around!!
