converting to manual steering

Hey if ya cant find anything at the junkyards the part # for the manual box for your truck is 27-5007 the brand is A1 Cardone most other brands use Cardone's parts and part #'s.

I am in the middle of the same thing (though for a different reason-- I am converting my Ranger to electric and don't want to waste the juice on running the power steering pump). I actually just purchased the Cardone 27-5007 manual steering gear box which does fit perfectly. I was very frustrated to find that the power steering pitman arm doesn't fit--what the hell is that about?!? Worst part is the manual steering pitman arm (E3TZ-3590-C) has been discontinued and does not appear to be for sale ANYWHERE. So, it is junkyard and forum searching time... if anyone has any good suggestions on where I can find one of these-- please let us know!

oh, also-- the cheapest place I found to purchase a refurbed gearbox was autopartsgiant.com ($187+ 75 core charge). Apparently the manual steering was not very prevalant for these-- couldn't find a used one online or at a salvage yard.

I ran my first Ranger for years with a power steering box with looped lines. I even raced it on a tight cornered offroad track. Nobody I knew could drive my truck. "What is wrong with your steering!" I finally hooked a pump up when my bosses Race car was broke and he needed to run mine. I thought that was really funny because he was about twice as big as me.
My v-8 truck has a manual box. I don't like it. The power box won't fit though.
The only time you'll ever notice a difference between power and manual rack and pinion is when you are sitting still. Power r&p is just a waste IMO.

i couldnt agree more. in fact, imo manual steering gives you a much better "road feel".

Did you loop your lines and try it yet? The problem with the manual Ranger steering box is that it has a real slow steering ratio so that wimps can steer it. I much prefer the ratio of the power box.

havent gotten around to it yet, i'd like to do it soon though as my PS pump is getting kind of noisy as well.

the steering racks for escorts are the same way. the manual racks are really lame to drive... i run a power steering rack with the lines unhooked and the inner seals removed.

The Mutant pony has a Mustang II power rack and no pump. It uses lines to supply pressure to either side. I just made one line to go from side to side and capped off the valve. It takes a little effort to turn around but, it works.

As noted, you also need to get the manual pitman arm, but I also found that I needed to get the steering shaft from the manual box as well. The splines of the steering box was different. Maybe it was just a year-to-year difference?

Anyways, I've found scores of these at the junkyard. The junkyard here in Saskatoon has around 20 Rangers with manual steering and manual brakes.

manual steering is not that rare here either, around $50 at the wrecker and several there
