So I'm start to get into some more major mods these days on my 98 Mounty and I've been hanging on to this badass 20 or 25gallon aluminum fuel cell I got awhile back and also have this super nice rail mounted inline pump... I already have a switch panel made up and installed and I always planned to put the fuel pump on a switch and relay.... So thinking I was gonna throw it in later today or tomorrow night possibly... Anybody have any experience doing this? I know i gotta have a return port into the tank, and a predicted before the pump, but what has anybody done about fixing the fuel gauge issue? Cause it's not gonna work? Just live with it and keep track of ur mileage???

1989 and up Fords(and Mercs) use 16-158 Ohms senders and gauges
16 ohms empty
158 ohms full

You can get universal senders, I think the closest is 10-180 ohms

Or use a GM sender, 0-90 ohms, and put a 16 ohm resistor in the line, making it 16-106 ohms, this would be accurate from 3/4 tank down to Empty

Right on thanx for the info, I really appreciate it! So u think I will be good otherwise? I'm thinking I'm gonn pull my spare tire and cut my truck floor out and recess the cell so it's 50/50 split have above the trunk floor line and half below.... Kinda worried about my whole car smelling like gas.... :/

Not familiar with the Mountaineer rear frame lay out but..................

You will get a gas smell if part of the tank is in the passenger compartment, also exhaust smell if the seal around the tank isn't perfect, and that will be hard to do since tank is mounted to the frame(or should be) and body is on rubber mounts so moves separately.

There is a picture here, post #403: http://www.explorerforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=125858&page=21

This is a Bronco II fuel tank mounted in spare tire space, 23gallon tank.
Same tank was used until 1990 so correct OHM sender should be available.
