One of the many things I like about the first and second gen Rangers is converting them to four wheel drive is a bolt in task. Well, it looks like this 2000 Ranger we have is going to stay with us for a while longer than I expected. It would be nice if it was four wheel drive. I know where a same year 4x Explorer is sitting I can get the suspension and running gear out of cheap. Is that a feasible swap? Are the frames similar enough to make it a bolt in job? Or, is there a lot of fabbing and torch work? If so, I am not interested. If this is doable, I want to use stock parts. I have no desire to send this thing in the air with a straight axle.

Is your Ranger an Edge model? The Edges have the 4wd suspension setup with torsion bars, all the other models have the 2wd setup with coil springs. If it's an Edge, there's a complete how-to thread on converting to 4wd: http://www.therangerstation.com/forums/showthread.php?t=32742

If it has coil springs, you'd probably have to do a lot fabricating. I'm not sure how different the frames are, but it's not really worth it.

If u are going to go to all the work to 4x4 it, why dont u just SAS it.

I di dthink about it. God knows I have enough running gear stacked up behind the shed. But that is not the point behind this truck. It is a daily driver that I would like ot have the option of locking in from time to time. Plus, I do not like theway the frame is designed. Older trucks are nice for a SAS, but not this one. I have never owned a Ranger this new nor have I messed with a Ranger with IFS. Now that I hav looked into I am not interested in converting this truck.
