are the transmissions tail housings different? or can i just install the transfer case to my transmission? i have been told the transmissions are different, is this true?

Yeah the transmissions are different between 2 and 4wd.
Also the engine crossmembers are completely different between 2 and 4wd so its not like you can just swap the beams out

If you want to swap a 2wd to 4x4 for the purposes listed in your profile look into a solid axle rather than a TTB.

In the end you will end up with a better product and less aggravation.

There are some vey determined people who have swapped out their engine cross-member
to convert to TTB-4x4 ( but to pull it off you need BOTH mad torch skills and either welding skills or a friend who has a big welder and lots of time and patience

and while you don't need to take the cab completely off the frame you do need to have it completely unbolted from the frame and supported 4-6" above the frame

(I had my cab resting 8" above the frame on a pair of 8"x8" timbers)
