I have done a 1988 2.9 auto to manual swap with success, so I am starting to research the same type swap for a 1991 with a 4.0.

I am reading that the bolt patterns are the same between the 4.0 and the 2.9/2.8? is this correct?

What year trucks can I pull from the wrecking yard to find a manual transmission that will swap in with minimal headaches? Will I have to swap or modify drive shafts with this swap?

I am looking for a Mazda M50, correct?

Any other tips?

Thanks

get a 4.0 manual trans ECM. for some reason the 2.9 is usually not too much a problem when going auto/manual. but a 4.0 with a manual trans, and an auto ecm will run with erratic idle, high idle, hanging idle etc.

Yes, M50-R1, but the M50 for the 4.0l had slightly different gearing read here:
http://www.therangerstation.com/tech_library/ManualTransmission.html

1991 and up on the 4.0l(OHV or SOHC) used the M50D-R1, from 2001 they switched to the M50D-R1HD but all have the same gearing.

2WD or 4x4?

4x4. Haven't picked the truck up yet, but apparently it will only do 50 mph so I'm thinking OD is gone? I just would rather have the manual and not mess w the auto. There are 2 trucks available for picking, a 1999 and a 2001. I'm not sure if they are auto or manual, but in the case they are auto, what are the odds that the transmission will bolt up? They are both also 4x4s. I will make sure and swap the computer, and the whole damn engine too if I have to.

I love these little trucks.
