I have a 2000 ranger, automagic, auto 4x4, dana 28 front, build date April 2000. Looking at the hub I am guessing i have a live axle setup because all i have is the nut on the outside i have no locking hub that i can see. I need to replace the wheel bearing and its a $200+ investment I want to get the right parts the first time around. Do i have a live axle setup or are they vacuum hubs? If i didnt give enough info just ask. Thanks.

You do not have a Dana 28.

the last "Dana 28" axle was built and installed in 1997.

And even that one was a "hybred D28" 28 rotating parts in a D35 housing

Indeed it is a low pinion D35 center section.

If you just have the stubs of the CV's sticking out with a big nut on the end then you don't have the PVH system, but rather the live axle set up. You could also just look for vacuum lines running down to the knuckles. No lines = live axle.

Ya im not sure why i put dana 28 i even have dana 35 written in my signature. All i have is the 2 or 3 wires going to the hub im guessing its for the 4wheel abs. also i saw online an inner and outer bearing listed for my truck. it was listed under 4 wheel drive but are they bearings for a 2 wheel drive or can i replace the bearings and not have to buy the whole hub assembly? thanks.

No, it comes as a hub assembly. The bearings are not serviceable.

I got the new hub assembly in place and all is good except the whining that started after the wheel bearing went is still there. As I pick up speed the noise gets faster also... to the point where the road noise drowns it out. Once I start to slow down again and the road noise decreases I can hear the whining again. As far as I can tell its coming from the front drivers wheel which is the hub I replaced. Any ideas as to what is causing this? Thanks.

Hello Coolman, I have the same noise on my 2000 4x4. I am about to replace my hubs also. Where did you purchase your hub and/or what brand are they? I've seen some on ebay for less than $100, but I am leary about them. They're probably cheap Chinese crap. I'll probably end up getting the Timken brand. Did you get the noise issue resolved or do you still have it? Could it be the passenger side or did you end up replacing that side also?

Hey Jacks its just a NAPA cheapo... they gave me the choice of $175 el cheapo or $260 for the one with the lifetime warranty. i took the cheaper one. also the noise i had ended up being an existing problem with the tranny thats just getting worse as time goes by.
