Hey guys ive got a 1987 ranger with a 4.0l out of a 96 explorer and 5spd tranny out of 5.0l mustang i am having a problem with surging while driving i have a massive loss in power under 3000rpm and it surges 2-6 times and then its balls out the truck cannot be driven nicely. it sounds/ smells like its being way over fueled. backfires under 3000rpm as well. running dual exhaust with magnaflow glass packs. i was told its because the comp is for auto and it has a 5 spd. have tried 3 other computers from 1996 explorer with no change. would a ranger comp do the trick?

Is the pcv clogged?

I believe you can run an auto computer with a manual tranny. The other way will not work.

My 88' is a 5spd and for a while I used a 87' auto computer, the only thing is that the check engine light would flash because there was no sensor for the auto trans. The Ford tech said it would be okay, but would be best to keep year and trans same on the computer.
