hey guys, i have a problem with my pos comp, its a gateway desk top, but last week i all the sudden noticed that my internet was going a lot slower, its taking forever to open pages, and download video clips in windows media player. i was looking in the add and remove programs and i noticed that i had the java thing on there, which i didn t install, i tried to delete it but it said "the feature you are trying to use ison a network resourse that is unavailable" then u can try again or cancel and when i press try again it pops up a window that say its either not there or i cant have acess to it. any help is appreciated thanks

The Java client is a common and harmless program. It allows you to view certain pages on the web. You don't want to uninstall it.

The slow Internet could be caused by many things. It might be spyware on the PC, misconfigured settings with your network adapter. Or a problem with the connection itself, i.e. your router or even ISP.

Are you on a shared connection?

well i have a dsl connectionbut i would really assume it would be spywear i dont have any anti virus programs know of any good free ones. im cheap and poor

1. You couldnt pay me to use internet explorer or outlook
2. I use AVG antivirus (free)
3. I use spybot (free)

LOL! Sorry but that is funnay... Get Spybot, Adaware, and Mozilla Firefox internet browser all for free...there are other better solutions if ya want to spend a lil $$ but these will help alot.

Stay off sites like myspace and that kinda bs helps too.

Your comp will run much faster if you delete all the porn.

Worked for me! lol

Get ride of the good things in life... What are you crazy

do like Natedog said, Everyone has their own opinion on programs, but what i use are Avast antivirus -free and ad-aware which is also free. A little tip, if a popup comes up hit alt and F4 at the same time, that will get ride of the tricky ones where the X is in the picture and what not.... and the +1 one Firefox. If you Really want to get tricky go type msconfig into you run command and you can look at what your computer will boot on startup, I uncheck all the boxes and then go back over and recheck the programs that i know are safe.

More good advice from Camma83...but Avast is good in some ways and not so good in others...like all of the sw available. The paid versions of the freebies are always better tho. Stay on top of this or your PC will self destruct.

The average time for an unprotected computer to be compromised after being connected to the net is 12 seconds. How long have you been surfing?

btw, compromised means loaded with virii, trojans, data miners and spyware. Like paying for sex, then not using any protection, with about the same results.

I use firefox, adaware, spybot, and AVG (free version).

When mine do this I run antivirus software, check for spyware, defrag the hard drive, etc. If you are running 256 of memory, add 512 to it for 768. That'll speed it up pretty good and only cost about $50 last time I bought a stick. Installs in seconds. If the OS is hosed, you can try to restore it back to an earlier date, but it only helps sometimes. If it is a dell built since the summer of '04, you can boot it up holding F11 and the control key and it will give you the option of restoring it back to like it was out of the box. This means you lose everything, but it will fix ANY problem except a hardware issue. Other computers can be restored like this also, you can search the net and find out how. The full restore will go so far back that even the "free" subscriptions to anti-virus and such that it came with new will work again for the 90 days or a year or whatever...

Yeah, your computer is probably running 40copies of the same tracking cookies...

I've got avast. I finally washed evil Norton and evil Mcafee right out of my hair. That's the worst pair of virus's possible.

Avast never pops out at you with threats. It quietly updates everything. It's free. I never get any virus's or whatever digital diseases are out there.

Yeah, Firefox is a big suggestion. Most virus's and adware are blocked by firefox, if anything gets through try spybot, its recieved several awards as a free anti-adware program.

yep, the majority here have it right: ditch Internet Exploder and Outhouse.

Get Firefox. then download adblocker plus add in for it.
get spybot Search and Destroy. download all updates and immunize Internet Exploder.
Get Lavasoft's Adaware 2007. download all updates.
AVG free is a great free antivirus.

run all three programs after updating them and fix any problems.

Another great program to have is CCleaner. This will fix most of your registry issues and will let you set up what automatically loads at start up. (much easier than msconfig) Just be sure to look at what you are disabling closely before disabling it...

One of the biggest problems I have found is that many programs want to install an update manager to run at start up. the bad ones for this are: Quicktime, Adobe Reader, Real Player and iTunes. This takes up valuable memory and can slow a machine down quite a bit if it has under 512mb of RAM. make sure these programs are not allowed to update automatically. you can update them as you use them, trust me anytime you launch one and there is a new version of it, it will let you know.
